I think you should better go for consultation first before going for surgery. During consultation you will come to know whether you can have laser eye surgery or not depending upon your eye condition. Currently Accuvision laser eye clinic is offering free consultations. You can try there.

I’m going to have it next year, as soon as I turn 18. I’m pretty much like you, -4.50. My uncle had it six months ago and now his sight is perfectly fine, never had problems. I hope it will be alright.

I’ve been thinking about this and looking into it. Just to name a few things that come into play: your prescription has to be stable (I think that means no change in at least a year), your cornea (the clear outer part that curves and covers your iris) has to be a certain thickness, and has to be clear (I’m not sure that’s the way the doctors phrase it, but some people’s corneas have some cell things that can react badly with the laser), and of course the cost (don’t forget to ask if the cost covers follow up visits you may need). Besides lasik there are other types of eye corrective surgery. And there are risks (like experiencing dry eye for a while, halo vision, etc). So basically, make sure you do your homework!

Be aware that there are risks for future employment. The hospitals around here will no longer employ surgeons who have laser surgery. Many airlines will no longer employ pilots who have laser surgery. Jet pilots in the military can no longer fly jets, although I don’t know if laser changes their status for flying things like helicopters.
Many people have developed chronic dry eye after having laser surgery. This will worsen when they get older.
You should realize what ALL the risks are before considering it. My doctor doesn’t recommend even contacts for people who have limited, no vision in one eye because the risk to the other eye are too great.
