Does the military really pay for your lasik eye surgery?

So I heard that a US military personnel can get lasik eye surgery free of charge? Is that true? Im planning to enlist in the US Navy and that would definitely make my life easier not having to worry about losing my glasses and the possible accidents. I seriously hate wearing glasses….

Yes they do, they also do PRK. Although my husband had two friends that had the military do a botched job and one had to be medically discharged. My husband and I paid out of pocket to get his eyes done with a well known and trusted civilian provider and has had 20/20 vision for 4 years now. Do your homework when it comes to someone messing with your eye sight.

Yes, but you need to be 21 years or older and qualify for the surgery.
You may not be able to go to Air Borne/Air Assault due to possible complications after you get the surgery.

They do pay for it. There are quite a few things involved. AS in your unit only has a certain amount of spots to get away. Also your time frame getting it done right. no unit wants to risk health complications before a deployment cycle. Its also based highly on your chain of command. So i would not enlist just for the surgery but if your going to enlist anyway check into it once you arrive at your unit.

Yes, they do and most commands encourage their soldiers to get it done. We had 20 soldiers get lasik when i was at fort hood. You have to go to eye doctor and get referrel for it to be done and you will be on your way to better eye sight. Well i know the Army does it dont know about the Navy, but i would assume they pay for it also. You will also be non-deployable for i think 90 days.

The Army will, if you are lucky enough to be stateside at your permanent duty station with more than a year left on your contract and with more than 90 days to go before a deployment. I was always either in Iraq or 90 days out on orders for Iraq or was less than a year from my ETS (they don’t count the fact that Stop Loss means you actually have two years left despite what your contract says.) So I never got it. I’m not sure whether the Navy has this program or not.
